Educational visitsGive kids a unique learning experience while they enjoy the outdoors with Christchurch Gondola! The Gondola, Time Tunnel and the Port Hills are wonderful resources for educational visits. Christchurch Gondola provides special rates for school groups and other institutions.
Your pupils can learn about the history and geology of the region in our time tunnel, exploring the links between our settler past and the present, and learning about volcanic activity and the way land is formed. Then they can go out for a walk on one of the Walkways, discovering how that information translates into the actuality of the landscape.
The Gondola Top Station is 15 minutes’ walk from the Cavendish Bluff Reserve, reached by the Cavendish Bluff track through native silver tussock and past evidence of ancient lava flows. There are many different species of native plants, some very rare, to be found in this area.
Banks Peninsula and the Port Hills were important sites of Maori settlement, from the early Moa hunters right up until the present day. Maori occupation of the area is traced in the Time Tunnel ride, and our Education Resource Pack contains further information and activities relating to the history and mythology of the Canterbury region.
Students can spend the day out on the hills, visiting the historical Pioneer Women’s Memorial and walking the Bridle Path, old-time link between the port of Lyttleton and Christchurch city. A perfect opportunity to get them thinking about the ways our forbears lived and the reality of their everyday lives.
